Nicholas Minshall, a child of the 80s, grew up with the sand between his toes.
He spent his younger years along the shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Long before venturing overseas and around the globe, he found his real adventure for life in the swamps and bayous of Boca Ciega Bay.
Welcome to Nicholas Minshall’s Author Page. Rediscover the 80s through Nick’s own experiences of the unforgettable decade that shaped his generation. Relive the entertainment, fashion, and technology that changed the world.
Nick’s adventures began at a young age, and like Dennis the Menace, he was a constant troublemaker. Little red tricycles were all the rage for toddlers back in the 80s, and the older kids got to rock out on their Big Wheels.
Every kid in the 80s had a pair of Chuck Taylors because they were stylish, comfortable, and affordable. In this 1983 photo, Nick is sporting a pair of Chuck Taylors, some tube socks, athletic shorts, and a striped T-shirt. He always preferred the preppy 80s look, even as a little kid.
Unfortunately, the sun would eventually bleach his read hair a darker brown.
Yes, Nick was a band geek too. As the 90s kicked into high gear, the preppy look that he sported at a younger age, became an extremely influential style. Sure, he could have chosen any instrument in the band to play, but Nick instead chose to play the French Horn, the only French Horn in the school’s band that year.
At only 11, Nick turned out to be quite good at playing the French Horn and excelled at almost all of his other studies too – especially language arts.
He began writing short stories that were shared in class. Some of his stories were even showcased at the local public library.
Thanks to all of the advancements in the 80s, the 90s was the perfect time for being a nerd or geek. Not everyone had a computer, but they sure did want one, and those who had them were always competing to see who was the best hacker.
It wasn’t until 1995 that most PC users started running Windows, because back then everyone ran DOS in one form or another. The anthem for all computer nerds in the 90s was the movie Hackers, which featured Angelina Jolie and Mathew Lilard.
Nicholas would eventually grow up, and rather than staying in one place, set out across the great oceans to visit the rest of the world.
By the late 90s, Nick was still sporting his traditional preppy style, although it had changed slightly over the years to stay in pace with the fashion of the times.
He set out to teach English overseas, and spent his free time exploring the farthest reaches of the globe, all while following his passion for writing.
Nick would eventually meet his match, and in 2006 he was married along the beaches of the Queen City of the South. While he gave up his nomadic lifestyle, he never gave up his passion for writing.
From his home in the Philippines, Nick continues to teach English and write. He has written more than a dozen self-published books and has been creating online content for webmasters from every part of the globe.
